Intimate Graduation Party for Under 20 Guests

Family-and-close-friends only. How to make a small party feel celebratory without scaling down the meaningful parts.

  1. Step 1

Aim for a sit-down meal, not a buffet

Under 20 guests means a single long table works. A sit-down meal feels more like a milestone than a buffet line. Order a 3-course catered meal at $30 per guest or cook one nicer main yourself (whole roast, prime rib, large lasagna).

  2. Step 2

    Skip rental tables and chairs

If you have a dining room or large kitchen, you have enough seating. Two extra folding chairs from a neighbor cover overflow. Rentals at this size are wasted money.

  3. Step 3

Invest in one centerpiece, not a balloon arch

A single tall floral arrangement at the center of the table reads more formal than a 20-balloon arch. $40 to $80 from a grocery-store florist. Add 4 to 6 votive candles for evening glow.

  4. Step 4

    Pre-plan one toast, two stories

Small parties live or die on the speeches. The host writes one toast, asks two close friends or family members for one specific story each. Aim for 2 minutes each, no more. Have them write it down.

  5. Step 5

    End with one shared activity

Small parties feel longer than they are if the energy dips. End with one shared activity: yearbook signing, a slideshow of childhood photos, or each guest writing one sentence on a memory book page. Keep it under 20 minutes.
