Graduation Cap Cake

A decorated cake topped with an edible or fondant graduation cap, central piece of most US graduation parties.

A graduation cap cake is the standard centerpiece cake for US graduation parties, topped with a fondant or chocolate cap usually colored in the school's tassel color. Most bakeries offer it as a $30 to $50 upgrade over a plain sheet cake. Sizing: a 1/4 sheet feeds 24 to 36 guests (the lower number is for generous slices, the higher for small slices). A 1/2 sheet feeds 48 to 72. Most graduation parties end up with a 1/4 sheet plus cookies or cupcakes as overflow, not a single huge cake. Custom touches that cost under $20 extra: the graduate's name in icing, the year (Class of 2026), or the school name. Touches that cost $40+: a fondant photo of the graduate, an edible image transfer, or a 3D fondant cap. Order at least 2 weeks ahead during May and June. The good bakeries book out, and the supermarket bakeries run out of fondant colors. If you ordered too late, fall back to a plain sheet cake from Costco with a separate fondant cap topper from Amazon for $12.
